Native type I collagen is not absorbed properly, so it must be pre-digested using industrial processes. This process is called hydrolysis.
Hydrolysis can be carried out by many means, the most common (but least recommended for collagen) being acid hydrolysis.
At HSN, we use enzymatic hydrolysis procedures to hydrolyse our collagen into peptides, which has resulted in a much less intense taste, as acid hydrolysis naturally generates a huge amount of salt and makes the raw material very bitter.
