Quality Devil's Claw Extract at your fingertips
Devil's Claw Extract (25:1) 400mg by EssentialSeries is a food supplement in vegetable capsules developed from a highly concentrated extract of the root of the plant Harpagophytum procumbens (Burch.) DC. ex Meisn. (Pedaliaceae), as the main ingredient of a simple yet effective formula developed with Vitamin C and Copper for their synergistic properties to the extract.
Harpagophytum procumbens is found in regions between 15° and 30° latitude in southern Africa (Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Angola, and, to a lesser extent, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique) (Ihlenfeldt and Hartmann, 1970). The plant typically grows in the red sandy soils of the Kalahari Desert, in areas with low annual rainfall.
Harpagophyte comes from the Greek harpago meaning 'hook' and phytos meaning 'plant', due to the hook shape of its fruits, which is why it is colloquially called devil's claw.

Certified species: 100% Harpagophytum procumbens
Did you know that…
plants of the genus Harpagophytum are colloquially called 'devil's claw' even though they are not of the species procumbens?

However, the scientific research and history of relevant use are specifically associated with this species, not the genus, so products where the commercial term 'devil's claw' is established must be guaranteed to be of species origin.
At HSN, we carry out an exhaustive control of the certified botanical species we use to prepare our extracts. Therefore, we ensure the supply of a 100% Harpagophytum procumbens extract with no other crossbred species that could worsen the physiological properties of the product.
Standardisation to 5% Harpagosides. Guaranteed quality control
Devil's Claw has many naturally occurring compounds, which are traditionally part of its composition and are what give it the properties it has been attributed.
Among the compounds naturally present in devil's claw are:
- Iridoid glycosides.
- Phenolic glycosides (actoside, isoactoside and bioside).
- Harpagoquinones.
- Phenolic acids (caffeic, cinnamic and chlorogenic).
- Flavonoids.
- Phytosterols.
Among all of them, the Iridoid Glycosides stand out, and within this group, there is a type of compound that is the most characteristic of the plant and the one that scientific research has focused on studying as it seems to be the most responsible for the plant's nutritional properties: Harpagosides.

Devil's claw extract by HSN is processed according to the highest quality procedures for the care of the native composition of the plant. This results in a high concentration of functional bioactives among which we ensure a 5% harpagoside content, measured through the use of highly sensitive laboratory analytical methods to ensure low batch-to-batch variability and accurate content.
High concentration per unit - Convenient way of use
HSN extract is 25 times more concentrated than the original root raw material from which it is prepared.
This high concentration allows a single 400mg capsule to store the equivalent of consuming more than 10g of native harpagophytum root.
What's more, each capsule contains 400mg, which is a high concentration considering the density of devil's claw extract. This is why not many companies can offer such a unitary supply and are limited to capsules with 20-50% less concentration.
Our extract is more convenient because, thanks to its high concentration and content, you don't need to take as many capsules a day as with other products. Take just 2 capsules a day and get the full effective dose.
Environmentally friendly harvesting and species protection
Devil's claw is a plant that has been postulated on numerous occasions as a candidate for listing as an endangered botanical species. However, national governments in the regions of Africa where it is harvested have taken commercial sustainability management measures to prevent this.
This doesn't mean that there are no vested interests behind the plant that may cause other producers not to respect the conditions necessary to ensure its sustainability.
At HSN, we only work with raw material producers that ensure respectful cultivation and harvesting, in compliance with public policies for the preservation of the life of the species.

Because there is no Planet B, HSN is doing its part.
100% vegan food supplement. In gelatine-free capsules
Our Devil's Claw extract is suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets as no animal ingredients are used in its composition, including the capsules.
Unlike most other manufacturers on the market, the capsules of HSN food supplements are not made from gelatine but from HPMC, a natural plant cellulose derivative, which results in high-strength vegetable capsules suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets.
Devil's claw is a traditionally used plant loaded with beneficial properties
Plants of the genus Harpagophytum, including procumbens, have been used for centuries by the traditional cultures of different African countries where these plants grow naturally.
Thanks to its characteristic richness in phytocompounds, it has a large number of properties, including its effects on the locomotor system, as it helps to strengthen the body's locomotive system.
This is achieved by helping to maintain joint health and maintain good mobility.
Vitamin C and copper have been added to the formula for this reason, as vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage, and copper contributes to the maintenance of normal connective tissue.
In addition, the devil's claw has important virtues associated with the digestive system as it helps support digestion and contributes to digestive comfort.
