Branched-chain amino acids are part of the group of essential amino acids, i.e. those amino acids that your body cannot create on its own. Amino acids are developed from natural presentations with a high content of these compounds, i.e. biological structures containing high amounts of amino acids can be used to extract and purify amino acids from their composition.

One of the classic sources that has been used industrially to extract amino acids is hair, sometimes even human hair. The way amino acids are processed is simple to understand, although in laboratory practice it is more complex. Essentially, after fermenting a plant substrate, the naturally occurring amino acids are extracted, purified, and presented in micronised powder form directly and in a highly pure form suitable for consumption:

BCAA's in powder form vs. BCAA's in tablet form. Which one to choose?

In terms of properties, the powder and other formats such as tablets or capsules are identical, i.e. the powder does not have different properties to other presentation formats.

The reason why powder is more commonly used is because it can be easily mixed in water with other compounds. In addition, its dosage can be more convenient, as gram quantities of amino acids are usually required, so the powder is easier to administer.

The powder, however, has a characteristically bitter taste that may be difficult to take for people who are not used to its flavour. RAW BCAAs are available with no additives:
